Three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka is still active on the tennis circuit, even if he is not quite the force he once was.
This past weekend, he fell short in a Challenger Tour final, but it showed that he is not yet ready to walk away from tennis.
During a period when Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were sharing most of the sport’s biggest trophies between them, Wawrinka managed to carve out three major victories of his own.
After Wawrinka beat Djokovic in the 2016 US Open final, the Serbian star had plenty of praise for him, which led to some interesting discussions at the time.
Back then, many already saw Andy Murray as part of what had become known as a Big Four. The media then asked Djokovic if it was time for Wawrinka to be included too.
It seems almost strange to remember there was a time when Djokovic lost Grand Slam finals, considering the sheer number he has won since.
Back in 2016, though, Wawrinka came from a set down to beat him at the US Open and claim his third major title.
Following that defeat, Djokovic gave his thoughts on whether Wawrinka should be considered part of an expanded ‘Big Five’.
“Well, I mean, he deserves to be in the mix, no doubt about it. Stan won three Grand Slams now and three different ones; an Olympic medal. Been around for so many years, and he plays best in the big matches.
“I mean, he definitely deserves to be mentioned in the mix of top players.
“He loves to play in the big matches. He comes up with his best game. He’s so solid from both corners. He’s got a good slice and an amazing one-handed backhand, all corners. Big serve. Moves well.
“He’s a very complete player. Sometimes if he feels right, he doesn’t miss much and makes a lot of winners and it’s hard to play him. That’s what happened today.”
In fairness to Wawrinka – and also Murray – they deserve immense credit for even being able to stay at the top of the sport during that period.
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Djokovic each securing at least 20 major titles made it nearly impossible for other players to compete effectively.
So, for them both to end their careers with three major titles is a serious achievement.
The US Open final in 2016 was a clear reminder of how well Wawrinka could compete against the best on his day. Djokovic recognised this after that match, and fans enjoyed seeing someone outside the usual trio get over the line again.
