Some of the biggest names in tennis history have come out of America, and a few of them overlapped during their careers.
Given how often they found themselves up against each other for major titles, it was only natural that some friction would develop.
No rivalry captures that tension quite like the one between Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. They weren’t just great players; their battles defined an era.
Every time they faced off, fans knew they were in for something special. It wasn’t just about who would win, but about how much it meant to both of them.
Despite all the talk about their differences, Sampras spoke up in 2011 to share his side of things.
Even years after both had stepped away from the sport, their competitive edge still showed during joint interviews.
The pair had a charity match in 2010, and even then, old habits seemed to resurface. During the event, with microphones picking up every word, Agassi joked about Sampras being tight with money. Sampras responded on court with a powerful serve that made his point clear.
Reflecting on the incident later, Agassi said: “We’ve straightened it out. Like I’ve said 150 times, it was a complete mistake on my part. ‘Hit for Haiti’ raised a lot of money; we did a lot of good things. But we unfortunately had a microphone on our mouths, and I was talking a lot. One thing wasn’t good.”
Sampras agreed that the matter was behind them: “In my eyes, it’s over. It’s unfortunate what happened. Andre apologised. It’s just one of those things that sort of got blown out of proportion over the last six months. We’re still here. He’s a rival and a friend.”
Back in 2006, another Grand Slam champion called Agassi more talented than Sampras which hinted at how close their rivalry really was.
It’s easy to see why Agassi might have felt some frustration towards Sampras, who had a knack for getting the better of him on the biggest stages.
The two met nine times in Grand Slam events, with five of those meetings coming in finals.
Agassi managed just one win in those finals, claiming his only major victory over Sampras at the 1995 Australian Open.
Sampras took six of their Grand Slam clashes and finished ahead in their overall head-to-head, winning 20 matches to Agassi’s 14.
