Serena Williams will return to Wimbledon this June in some capacity, but she's still not ready to share her full plans just yet.
Williams, 44, made her official return to the WTA Tour last week by competing in doubles at the HSBC Championships. Her and Victoria Mboko secured a 7-6, 6-2 win over Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. Unfortunately, they had to withdraw from the event because Mboko suffered a knee injury one day later in a singles match.
“I mean, I thought she was moving great,” Mboko said in regards to Williams' return. “There was moments in the match where, I think there was that one shot [Williams] hit, you were on the run … and I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, she’s got it.’ From my perspective, I feel like it’s all great. It was a lot of fun. It was amazing.”
Earlier this week, Wimbledon announced that Serena and her sister, Venus, received a doubles wild card invitation for this year's tournament. The Williams sisters have already captured 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles, which includes six championships at the All England Club.
"Well, I think it's going to be fun. My daughter Olympia told me that I should play with Venus. She's always right," Serena said. "She's like 'Mom you should play with Venus'. She's very serious, she's very smart. She's very wise. I said 'OK Olympia, we'll see if we can do it.'"
After competing in the Berlin Open this Tuesday afternoon, Williams was asked if she wants a singles wild card for this year's Wimbledon Champions.
Let's just say the 23-time Grand Slam champion's response was very telling.
"Oh my Gosh, there's some left? Would you be interested if I took it? You think I'm ready for singles," Serena laughed. "I need to go to work."

Williams hasn’t competed in a match since her loss to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the 2022 US Open.
It's no secret that tennis fans want to see Williams compete in singles again. After all, she's one of the most electrifying athletes the sport has ever seen.
At the end of the day though, Williams is going to do what's right for her health. If she's not ready to compete in singles, she may wait until the US Open.
