Emma Raducanu produced a strong performance in her first two rounds of Wimbledon. But moving to the fourth round won’t be an easy task for her.
She will be locking horns with World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Both the players have not yet lifted a grass-court title.
Aryna Sabalenka is chasing her fourth title of the season after her wins in Brisbane, Miami, and Madrid. She has so far reached seven finals this season, including at the Australian Open and the French Open.
In Melbourne, Sabalenka failed to complete the three-peat due to her three-set defeat to Madison Keys. She then reached the French Open final for the first time in her career but was unsuccessful in beating World No.2 Coco Gauff, who won’t get the chance to complete the Channel Slam due to her opening-round exit.
Apart from these tournaments, Sabalenka made it to the final of the Indian Wells and Stuttgart Open. Before arriving in London, the 27-year-old lost to Marketa Vondrousova in the semifinals of the Berlin Open.
Sabalenka has never reached the Wimbledon final. She played the semifinals in 2021 and 2023 but last year, an injury forced her to withdraw from the tournament. In the two Majors she played before Wimbledon, Raducanu lost to Iga Swiatek in the Australian Open third round and in the French Open second round.
Before reaching the third round, the three-time Grand Slam singles champion knocked out Carson Branstine and Marie Bouzkova in straight sets. She reached round three at SW19 for the third time in her career.
Emma Raducanu is bidding to win her first title of the season. She in fact has never reached a tour-level final since winning the 2021 US Open as a qualifier. She produced her best performance since that fairytale run in this year’s Miami Open where she registered four consecutive wins and lost to World No.3 Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals.
Before setting up the third-round clash with the reigning US Open champion, Raducanu knocked out compatriot Mingge Xu in the first round and 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the second round. She arrived in London after playing two grass-court events.
At the Queen’s Club Championships, 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Qinwen Zheng knocked her out in the quarterfinals. Later, the 22-year-old lost to eventual winner Maya Joint in the last 16 of the Eastbourne International.
Sabalenka will be the heavy favorite to win this match. Even though on grass she has struggled, she can still be quite aggressive on the surface.
She has met Raducanu just once. They locked horns with each other in the third round of last year’s Indian Wells, which the Belarusian won in straight sets.
Sabalenka has also played two finals on grass, losing both. She lost the 2018 Eastbourne International to former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki. In 2022, she reached the final of the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships, only to lose to Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Match Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
