Jannik Sinner progressed to his third consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal after receiving a walkover from Grigor Dimitrov on Monday (July 7), who injured his right pectoral muscle after hitting an ace in the third set. The Italian ace too injured his elbow and will be hoping to recover in time before his next match.

Sinner is pitted against 10th seed Ben Shelton next. Shelton scheduled the quarterfinal clash with the World No.1 after overcoming Lorenzo Sonego in four sets.

Jannik Sinner vs. Ben Shelton: Match Preview

Jannik Sinner is chasing his second title of the season. Back in January, he outclassed World No.3 Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open final to lift his third Grand Slam title.

He then did not play for three months due to his doping ban, but after his return, the 23-year-old played to back-to-back finals on clay, losing both to his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz. In the Rome final, Sinner lost easily. But the French Open final was a tight affair as it ended not before five hours and 29 minutes, which has now become the longest final in the tournament’s history.

Following the French Open heartbreak, Sinner arrived in Halle to defend his title but suffered a second-round exit after a three-set defeat to eventual champion Alexander Bublik. At Wimbledon, Sinner was moving past opponents one after the other without breaking a sweat, but dropped two sets when he was up against former World No.3 Grigor Dimitrov in the last 16.

Ben Shelton, on the other hand, has played only one final this season, the result of which didn’t end in his favor. He lost to home favorite Zverev in the final of the BMW Open.

Before arriving in London, the American ace played three grass-court tournaments. At the Boss Open, he lost to eventual runner-up Zverev in the semifinals, but at the Queen’s Club Championships and Mallorca Open, he suffered opening-round exits.

In the two Grand Slam events before Wimbledon, Shelton lost to Sinner in the Australian Open semifinal, while Alcaraz went past him in the fourth round of the French Open. The 22-year-old has never reached a Grand Slam final but twice he has advanced to the semifinals- in this year’s Australian Open and at the 2023 US Open which he lost to eventual winner Novak Djokovic.

Now, Shelton has progressed to the Wimbledon quarterfinal for the first time in his career. But Sinner was a semifinalist here in 2023, losing the match in straight sets to 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic.

Jannik Sinner vs. Ben Shelton: Match Prediction

Shelton has never reached a final in grass-court events, but Sinner has won the 2024 Halle Open on the surface. The two youngsters will be facing each other for the second time at Wimbledon as well as the second time on grass.

In overall head-to-head meetings, Sinner has faced Shelton six times, winning five of those matches. Shelton had registered his lone victory when they faced each other for the first time in the 2023 Shanghai Masters fourth round.

The upcoming match is predicted to be a tough affair as Shelton too has been producing some good tennis in the event. But given Sinner’s win-loss record against Shelton and his previous Wimbledon campaigns, he is expected to win this match.

Match Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
