Jannik Sinner has reached the fourth round of Wimbledon for the fourth consecutive time. This season, he has dropped just 17 games en route to the last 16 of Wimbledon, beating Roger Federer‘s record who dropped 19 games at the 2004 Wimbledon.
In round three, the Italian beat Spain’s Pedro Martinez to schedule his next match against Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian ace knocked out Austria’s Sebastian Ofner.
Jannik Sinner is bidding to win his second title of the season. Back in January, he breezed past World No.3 Alexander Zverev in straight sets to defend his Australian Open title.
Sinner then received his doping suspension from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and ended up missing three months of tennis. After making his comeback at the Italian Open, Sinner failed to lift the title in front of the home crowd as he lost the final to Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner then progressed to the French Open final for the first time, only to schedule his career’s first Grand Slam final against Alcaraz. Despite taking a 2-0 lead and having three match points in the fourth set, the 23-year-old ended up losing the match in five hours and 29 minutes, which has now become the longest French Open final.
The World No.1 then, for the first time since the Canadian Open last year, failed to reach a singles final. He was defeated in the second round of the Halle Open by eventual winner Alexander Bublik. Sinner was playing in the tournament to defend his title and also to lift his career’s second grass-court title.
Grigor Dimitrov kick-started his campaign for this season at the Brisbane International and although he reached the semifinals there, he failed to secure a win in the next three tournaments he played, before breaking the streak at Indian Wells, where he made it to the fourth round.
In Miami then, eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic knocked him out in the semifinals. On the clay swing after, the 34-year-old played the quarterfinal of the Monte Carlo Masters and the fourth round of the Madrid Open.
At the Italian Open and at the French Open, Dimitrov suffered an opening-round exit and handed a walkover to his first-round opponent, respectively. He was scheduled to play the Queen’s Club Championships next to kick-start his campaign on the grass swing, but he withdrew from the tournament. Dimitrov hasn’t yet won a title since last year’s Brisbane International.
Dimitrov has not yet reached a Grand Slam final. At Wimbledon, he was a semifinalist in 2014, while last year, he handed a walkover to 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round.
Sinner is aiming to reach his first final at Wimbledon as he produced his best in the tournament in 2023 by reaching the semifinal (lost to Djokovic). Last year, he was defeated in the last eight by Medvedev.
Sinner entered Wimbledon as the heavy favorite to win, so he is expected to secure an easy win over Dimitrov. The South Tyrol native has met the World No.21 five times and holds a 4-1 head-to-head lead.
Match Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in straight sets.
