Novak Djokovic has made another stride forward toward his historic 25th Grand Slam title. He moved past compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic to book a spot in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

But a difficult challenge awaits him now. He will be up against a seeded player for the first time in the tournament. Alex de Minaur, the 11th seed, is his opponent. The Aussie scheduled the match against the Serb after knocking out August Holmgren.

Novak Djokovic vs. Alex de Minaur: Match Preview

Novak Djokovic is chasing his second title of the season. He lifted his 100th singles title at the Geneva Open by beating Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

It was his first title since his victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics final over World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz. Since that win, Djokovic still hasn’t yet captured a Big Title.

He came close to winning the Miami Open but couldn’t cross the final hurdle in the form of Jakub Mensik. Djokovic registered three consecutive defeats twice this year as before the Miami Open, he lost in his opening rounds of the Qatar Open and Indian Wells.

Then after Miami, the former World No.1 couldn’t beat his opening-round opponents at the Monte Carlo Masters and the Madrid Open. After winning the Geneva Open, Nole suffered a French Open exit with a straight-set defeat to World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals.

He then skipped the warm-up events on grass before Wimbledon. In the grass-court Grand Slam event, Djokovic defeated Alexandre Muller, Dan Evans, and Miomir Kecmanovic in the first three rounds. He last won a Major at the 2023 US Open; while at Wimbledon, Djokovic, before this season, played the finals since 2018, losing only in the last two seasons to Alcaraz.

Alex de Minaur went past Roberto Carballes Baena, Arthur Cazaux, and August Holmgren before setting up the fourth-round clash with Djokovic. The 38-year-old is the first-seeded player de Minaur will play in the event.

This season, de Minaur played a singles final just once. He reached the Rotterdam Open final, but couldn’t go past Alcaraz. De Minaur has never progressed beyond the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam tournament, reaching the stage in every Major. Last year at Wimbledon, he scheduled a match against Djokovic in the last eight, but an injury forced him to withdraw.

Novak Djokovic vs. Alex de Minaur: Match Prediction

While Djokovic is chasing his ninth grass-court title at Wimbledon, de Minaur has two titles on the surface under his belt. He took home the 2021 Eastbourne International and the 2024 Rosmalen Grass Court Championships.

Apart from this, the 26-year-old also played in the 2023 Queen’s Club Championships final, only to lose to Alcaraz. From the eight grass-court titles on grass, Djokovic lifted seven at Wimbledon, last winning in 2022 by beating Nick Kyrgios.

Djokovic has played de Minaur thrice in his career, winning two of those matches. Many believe Wimbledon is the best as well as last chance for Djokovic to add another title to his Grand Slam tally; but at this stage of his career, anything can happen, so de Minaur may end up pulling off an upset.

Match Prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in five sets.
