It's day two of Wimbledon, and the first round action for Australian and New Zealand players continues. Australian men's No. 1 Alex De Minaur and Australian women's No. 1 Daria Kasatkina—the only seeded players from Oceania—began their campaigns with convincing wins.
However, several more Australians have already been eliminated, including Adam Walton, Priscilla Hon, and Maya Joint. Here's a rundown of the action involving Australian and New Zealand representatives on the second day of Wimbledon.
World No. 11 De Minaur is looking to build on his strong 2024 performance, where he reached the quarterfinals but withdrew before facing Novak Djokovic. The 26-year-old Australian secured his fifth consecutive win at SW19 after defeating Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets. De Minaur won 80% of his first-serve points and 60% on his second, offering his opponent very few break opportunities.
While De Minaur converted 5 of 10 break points, Carballes could only manage 1 of 5. The first two sets took De Minaur less than an hour and a half to take a commanding 6-2, 6-2 lead. Although the Spaniard showed some fight in the third set—getting his first break when down 4-5—De Minaur held firm in the tie-break, closing out the victory 7-6(7-2). In the second round, he'll face French qualifier Arthur Cazaux.
World No. 18 Kasatkina arrived at Wimbledon with questions about her form after three consecutive grass-court losses. However, she proved she's always ready for the big stage, making it 10 consecutive times she's won her Grand Slam debut after defeating Colombia's Emiliana Arango (No. 76). The Russian-born Australian struggled with 11 double faults and 38 unforced errors throughout the match, though she ultimately proved more consistent than her opponent in crucial moments.
Both players were vulnerable on serve, but Kasatkina performed better in key moments, saving several break points. In the first set, Kasatkina squandered a 5-3 lead and saw Arango level the score, but she stepped up to take the set 7-5. In the second set, 'Dasha' went up 5-2 and missed two match points before securing the win 7-5, 6-3. Kasatkina still has much to improve on her serve if she wants to extend her run at the All England Club. Her next opponent will be Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu (No. 115).
Australian men were also featured in several other first-round matches, notably the epic battle of world No. 90 Adam Walton, who lost the first two sets to Arthur Cazaux but managed to stretch the match to a fifth set. However, he eventually ran out of steam, and the Frenchman defeated him 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-7(5), 6-1. Cazaux will face another Australian in the second round: none other than Alex De Minaur.
On the other hand, Alexander Vukic (No. 93) salvaged a victory to join the second round. After taking a two-set lead against Chun Hsin Tseng (No. 86), he managed his advantage and closed out the victory 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4). He'll have a tough mission in the second round against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, and it remains to be seen if he can pose a challenge to the Italian.
• Arthur Cazaux (Q) vs. Adam Walton: 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-7(5), 6-1
• Alexander Vukic vs. Chun Hsin Tseng: 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4)
• Alex De Minaur [11] vs. Roberto Carballes Baena: 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(2)
• Fabian Marozsan vs. James McCabe (Q): 6-1, 6-4, 6-3
• Ben Shelton [10] vs. Alex Bolt (Q): Match to be played
• Rinky Hijikata vs. David Goffin: Match to be played
Beyond Kasatkina's win, there wasn't much good news for Australian women, as two of their representatives were eliminated by Russian opponents. World No. 134 Priscilla Hon—who had come through qualifying—could do little against Ekaterina Alexandrova [18]. Similarly, 19-year-old world No. 41 Maya Joint could do little against Russia's Liudmila Samsonova [19] and also fell in straight sets.
• Ekaterina Alexandrova [18] vs. Priscilla Hon (Q): 6-2, 7-5
• Daria Kasatkina [16] vs. Emiliana Arango: 7-5, 6-3
• Liudmila Samsonova [19] vs. Maya Joint: 6-3, 6-2
