Wimbledon Briefing - US Results: Taylor Fritz advances as Jordan Thompson retires

Taylor Fritz advances to the Wimbledon Quarter-Finals for the third time on Sunday when he saw off Jordan Thompson. Albeit the Aussie ace was forced to retire due to injury.

The fifth seed was leading 6-1, 3-0 when the 31-year-old ended his tournament on No.1 Court in what was a shame for the Australian who is one of only a few left up until this point.

Fritz perhaps goes into the latter stages as one of the favourites coming off the back of a superb Eastbourne run where he won a record fourth title. He rallied from the brink against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in five sets and then went the distance against Gabriel Diallo in the second round. He then saw off Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets in the third round.

Fritz was in comparison only on court for 40 minutes against Thompson having spent close to nine hours on court through his first three matches. He had heavy strapping on his right leg and struggled with a back issue in losing to the American.

"It is not the way I want to go through," Fritz said. "I was really excited to play Jordan today. I was excited to play some good tennis and it is just sad. He has been battling. He has been playing five setters. He was out playing a long doubles match yesterday, so he has been battling out here and respect to him for coming out. His body is not right, so I feel bad for him and hope he feels better."

Only Amanda Anisimova is also in action on Sunday from an American point of view when she takes on Linda Noskova in a match which could herald a latter stage meeting with Aryna Sabalenka - a familiar foe.
