Wimbledon cleared to have full attendance for finals

When Wimbledon gets underway June 28, attendance will initially be capped at 50% capacity due to concerns related to COVID-19.

According to the BBC and the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), however, Centre Court will be cleared to reach its 15,000-person capacity for the men's and women's finals that will occur next month. Additionally, Wembley Stadium will be allowed to host roughly 45,000 fans for the knockout stages of the ongoing UEFA European Championship.

"We are pleased to have worked closely with the government, public health bodies, and our local authority in Merton, to confirm that, as part of this next phase of pilot events, the Championships 2021 will begin on Monday 28 June with 50% capacity across the grounds, building to full capacity crowds of 15,000 on Centre Court for the finals weekend," the All England Club said in a prepared statement. "This will enable us to fulfill our aspiration of staging the best Wimbledon possible within the current circumstances, with the health and safety of all those who make Wimbledon happen - our guests, competitors, members, staff, media, officials, local residents, and partners - remaining our highest priority."

Per the BBC, supporters who attend England's group games during Euro 2020 must show proof they've either received COVID-19 vaccine shots or tested negative for the coronavirus before they enter the venue.

Last year's Wimbledon tournaments were canceled because of the health crisis, the first time the events did not take place since 1945.
