Marketa Vondrousova had barely played until the last two weeks but despite injury travails, she has proven this week that she is still a formidable operator at the highest level winning the Berlin Ladies Open.
Vondrousova has won her first title since Wimbledon in 2023. Albeit remarkably she had barely played since then, she had surgery after Wimbledon last year and looked to be an injury doubt going forward.
But this week in particular in seeing off Aryna Sabalenka, she showed that she is one player that no seeded player wants to draw at SW19.
Xinyu Wang heads to Bad Homburg after a career best week and she sits in a section with Svitolina and Paolini who no doubt won’t want her on form. But Vondrousova just wouldn’t be denied.
Madison Keys, Ons Jabeur and Diana Shnaider were all ousted in the run up to the title in what was one of the toughest title runs of the year on paper.
But she sealed it 7-6(10), 4-6, 6-2 coming from losing the second set to motor home in three comfortably in the third.
A player that has returned from nowhere just in time for the tournament she won two years ago that some saw as a fluke.
But she will be out to show it wasn’t as she heads to London full of confidence.
