Wimbledon qualifying set for potential blockbuster: Bianca Andreescu vs. Lois Boisson showdown looms
Kyodo News

The women's Wimbledon qualifying rounds could see an early marquee matchup, with former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu potentially clashing with Loïs Boisson, the French sensation from Roland Garros. Both players will need to win their first-round matches this Tuesday to advance in the qualifier.

The Frenchwoman, Boisson, was relatively unknown until a few weeks ago, but she had a remarkable run at the French Open – where she received a wildcard – advancing to the semifinals by defeating players like Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva along the way.

The 22-year-old climbed from outside the Top 500 to a career-high of World No. 65. However, the Wimbledon entry list had already been finalized, leaving her out of the main draw and obliging her to play in qualifying. Although some anticipated a potential wildcard, Boisson ultimately entered the qualifying draw as the first seed.

On the other hand, Andreescu is still working to return to the top ranks after a year away from the courts due to injuries, which caused her ranking to plummet. With only a handful of tournaments since her return, she is currently ranked No. 147, meaning she also didn't secure direct entry into Wimbledon. As a former Grand Slam champion, she seemed a candidate for a wildcard, but the organization ultimately prioritized young local players.

With the qualifying draw now set, Loïs Boisson is scheduled to face Canadian Carson Branstine in the first round, while Andreescu will play against Brazilian Laura Pigossi. If both secure victories, they will have a high-profile second-round encounter.

Nevertheless, the winner of this potential clash would still have one final round to play before thinking about reaching the Wimbledon main draw, with Maja Chwalinska and Xiyu Wang as potential opponents in the third round of qualifying.
