Iga Swiatek’ s consistency this season has proven she’s at the top of her game. With four titles this season to her name, she is hoping to win another at the Roland Garros. She’s also aiming to win a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Polish star exited the Tokyo Olympics after losing to Spain’s Paula Badosa in the second round. She was in tears after the match having just won her maiden Grand Slam at the French Open in 2020. But, all that has changed this year for Swiatek. She’s in a better position to claim a medal at this year’s Olympics.
Swiatek’s brilliant clay form saw her win two of the three clay tournaments this season. The 22-year-old reached the semifinals of the Stuttgart Open but then regrouped in Madrid to claim her first Madrid title of her career. She then defeated Aryna Sabalenka again at the Italian Open final to become the first woman since Serena Williams to win Madrid and Rome titles.
She’s now hoping to win her fourth Roland Garros and her third consecutive clay major title. Speaking at the draw event in Paris, the four-time Grand Slam champion revealed that she will be hoping to win a medal at the Paris Olympics recounting her maiden Olympics in Tokyo in 2021.
I know I have a chance to compete again this year. You know in Tokyo I remember it was stressful. So, this year I'm trying to really work hard to be prepared for the Olympics. Hopefully I'm going to use the little experience I got in Tokyo and in the past few years. And I will try to do everything, step-by-step and the tournament would be as any other tournament for me though it is the Olympics. So, winning any medal would be a dream come true. Iga Swiatek said
Meanwhile, she added that she has been training hard, accepting the different changes in tournaments, and going for each title. Winning the gold medal would surely be Swiatek’s aim even though she doesn’t explicitly state it.
Iga Swiatek’s consecutive clay Masters 1000 wins cemented her place as the World No.1. The Polish star is now over 3,000 points ahead of Aryna Sabalenka in No.2. She is also the favorite to win the Roland Garros having won it thrice in four years.
Ahead of the May 26 kick-off of the event, the Polish star revealed that winning the Madrid Open and Rome Masters has given her the confidence she needs to win the Roland Garros.
The last results, especially in Madrid and Rome, for sure have given me the confidence. And I know I can adjust to any any kind of condition in a short amount of time. Iga Swiatek added
Meanwhile, last year, Swiatek defeated Karolina Muchova in three sets to claim the French Open title.
