Tennis fans learned on Saturday that Destanee Aiava will retire from the WTA Tour following the 2026 season.

Aiava, 25, emerged as the world No. 147 in singles when she was just a teenager. Although she's still incredibly young, she has decided it's in her best interest to retire from professional tennis. She announced her decision on Instagram with an emotional letter.

"From the moment I had my first lesson at Casey Tennis Club, my entire life was tennis. I often wondered what my life would have looked like if I’d chosen anything else and whether everything I sacrificed for this sport was actually worth the cost," Aiava wrote. "There was a time in my career when I had reached the point that comes just before you make your big breakthrough, when the world is at your feet and nothing can tough you. I was only 17, unprepared and dangerously naive to the consequences of trusting the wrong people. The trajectory of my career was never the same after that."

Despite being unhappy on tour for a while now, Aiava felt like she owed it to herself to keep playing. That being said, she called out those who have given her nothing but hate over the past few years.

“I want to say a ginormous f--- you to everyone in the tennis community who’s ever made me feel less than. F--- you to the people who sit behind screens on social media, commenting on my body, my career or whatever the f--- hey want to nitpick," she continued.

“And f--- you to a sport that hides behind so-called class and gentlemanly values. Behind the white outfits and traditions is a culture that’s racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile to anyone who doesn’t fit the mould. Life is not meant to be lived in misery or half assed. My ultimate goal is to be able to wake up everyday and genuinely say I love what I do – which I think everyone deserves the chance at.”

Tennis fans react to her sudden retirement.

While fans will miss seeing Aiava on the court, they're glad she's prioritizing her health over everything else.

"You've always been so strong despite the haters. I've always been a fan and I wish you nothing but success and happiness in your new chapter," one person wrote.

"So proud of you!! And so excited to see your next chapter unfold too," a second person said.

"I’ve followed your career from the start and have been a big advocate for all the good things you bring to the sport of tennis," another person commented. "You have inspired so many, stood up for yourself when no one else did and didn’t succumb to the mould and paved your own way. Whatever 2026 brings - I will be cheering you on and manifesting nothing but good vibes and success! And can’t wait to see what you do beyond tennis."

Hopefully, Aiava gets the chance to make a deep run at one of the three remaining Grand Slam tournaments this season.
