2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep will make her first singles appearance of 2025 on home soil at the WTA 250 in Cluj-Napoca. The former world No. 1’s match is one of nine scheduled on a busy day. We at LWOT predict all the action here and in a separate article, including Peyton Stearns vs Varvara Gracheva. But which players do you think will reach the next round?
Head-to-head: Golubic 2-1 Rus
Golubic is a better hard-court player than Rus, but the Dutchwoman can cause problems by hitting her left-handed forehand with heavy spin into Golubic’s single-handed backhand. The pair had an epic battle in Jiujiang three months ago that Golubic won in the deciding set. This could go either way, but the pretty slow conditions in Cluj-Napoca suit Rus, who plays her best tennis on clay, slightly more. The Dutchwoman is backed to win narrowly.
Prediction: Rus in 3
Head-to-head: Danilovic 1-0
This might have seemed like a good draw for Parks a few months ago. However, Danilovic has significantly improved on hard courts, as proven by her Guangzhou Open title run and her beating of Jessica Pegula at the recent Australian Open. Her defensive skills can blunt Parks’ big serving and hitting.
Prediction: Danilovic in 2
Head-to-head: Begu 1-0 Cocciaretto
At her best, Cocciaretto’s game is more formidable than Begu’s. There is uncertainty surrounding the Italian before this clash because she lost her first three matches of 2025 and her only previous meeting with Begu. The Italian’s superior game when it comes near clicking is still enough for me to back her, but a fourth consecutive loss in 2025 would not be surprising.
Prediction: Cocciaretto in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Burrage is likely to be the aggressor throughout most of this match. The Briton showed her talent by competing against former US Open champion Coco Gauff at the Australian Open. Bogdan’s defense needs to be impressive to prevail. However, the home favorite usually prefers soaking up pressure instead of being aggressive herself and might be dogged enough to prevail.
Prediction: Bogdan in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Predicting what Halep’s level will be is challenging. The two-time Grand Slam winner’s return to tennis since March has been interrupted by consistent injury issues. The best performance was her first match back against Paula Badosa at the Miami Open, ending in a three-set loss. Halep’s indifferent level since and injuries make Bronzetti the most likely winner, despite the enthusiastic support Halep will receive in Cluj-Napoca.
Prediction: Bronzetti in 2
