Day 4 of the WTA Finals in Riyadh features the Stefanie Graf Group, which means World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka and World No.3 Coco Gauff will be in action. It is a must-win match for Gauff and Jasmine Paolini, while Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula will look to strengthen their place for the semifinals. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for both the matches, but which players will win?
Head-to-Head: Gauff 3-3 Paolini
Coco Gauff would be disappointed with her performance against Jessica Pegula in the first match, as she hit 17 double faults and made 45 unforced errors from her forehand wing. It wasn’t the most high-quality match, but Gauff has to do better against Jasmine Paolini, who will test her forehand as much as possible.
Paolini had no chance against Aryna Sabalenka, but this is a matchup she can take advantage of, especially if Gauff keeps being erratic. The Italian has defeated Gauff three times this season but lost the last encounter in Wuhan. Gauff must feel more confident after the win in Wuhan, and I anticipate that the defending champion will step up and perform much better in this match.
Prediction: Gauff in 3
Head-to-Head: Sabalenka 8-3 Pegula
Aryna Sabalenka is off to a solid start in her bid to win the WTA Finals for the first time. She served extremely well against Jasmine Paolini and will need to maintain it to have the best chance of winning the title. Sabalenka’s last loss came against Jessica Pegula, and she would be looking for revenge.
Jessica Pegula got out a gritty win over Coco Gauff as she remained more consistent against an erratic opponent. However, Pegula dropped a set despite Gauff’s 75 unforced errors, implying that her own level was not as high. She won’t be able to get away with it against the world No.1 and has to improve drastically. I am going with Sabalenka.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
