A little over a month since her Roland Garros semifinal glory, Lois Boisson has just made her first WTA Tour final. Facing her will be Anna Bondar, the defending champion, who won the event when it was in a slightly lower category (WTA 125). Who do you think will come away with the title at Am Rothenbaum in Hamburg?
Head-to-head: 1-1
Anna Bondar had to navigate a high-quality field to keep her WTA Hamburg title defense going, especially since last year’s tournament was a WTA 125. Even in the opening round, she was pushed hard by Noma Noha Akugue, before withstanding World No. 16 and top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in an almost three-hour-long quarterfinal battle. The Hungarian has shown plenty of resilience as she increased her win streak at this venue to 9 in a row, defeating Kaja Juvan from a set down on Saturday.
Lois Boisson hadn’t played much since her dream Roland Garros run, suffering early exits at Wimbledon qualifying and at the WTA 125 in Bastad last week. The Frenchwoman picked it up in Hamburg after a tough battle with Tamara Korpatsch in the second round. From there onwards, she was gearing up with every round, culminating in the win over No. 2 seed Dayana Yastremska in the semifinals. Bondar and Boisson traded a couple of meetings in Swiss ITF events last year (Bellinzona and Chiasso). It was around that time that the Frenchwoman began her incredible run of form that led to a Roland Garros wildcard announcement, right before she suffered a season-ending injury.
It took a while, but she seems fully back on track now. Her physical style could help her settle some of the early nerves that she could be feeling in her first main tour final. While Bondar already won at this venue last year, the event’s return as a WTA 250 also means it’s the biggest match of the Hungarian’s life. Boisson’s big stage experience from Paris might be worth a lot here.
Prediction: Boisson in 3
