Defending champion Anna Bondar took out No. 1 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the WTA Hamburg quarterfinals on Friday. However, it’s not as if the Hungarian now has a clear path to another title. She faces Kaja Juvan, while the bottom half of the draw features No. 2 seed Dayana Yastremska and Roland Garros hero Lois Boisson. Who do you think will make the final at Am Rothenbaum?
Head-to-head: Juvan 1-0
Anna Bondar eliminated World No. 16 Ekaterina Alexandrova and is doing a fantastic job keeping her title defense alive. But that match lasted almost three hours, and it remains to be seen how much steam the Hungarian will have left in the tank for the semifinal against Kaja Juvan. To be fair, it’s not like Juvan had a significantly easier passage to the final four; it’s just that her match ended a lot earlier in the day. The Slovenian is in the process of recovering her career after missing almost the entire 2024 season with an injury. Perhaps this is the moment for her comeback to really speed up. Bondar’s the better player, but Juvan has a bag of tricks up her sleeve and might run into a gassed opponent here.
Prediction: Juvan in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Lois Boisson hasn’t played the heaviest schedule since her historic Roland Garros run, and the jury is still out on whether she can pull anything like that off again anytime soon. What’s not arguable is that after early exits at Wimbledon qualifying or in Bastad, she’s back to performing at a very high standard in Hamburg. However, No. 2 seed Dayana Yastremska is a formidable opponent, and despite her all-or-nothing play style, the Ukrainian has actually been playing with decent consistency lately. Yastremska will be in charge of the baseline in this match, and given how she’s playing this week, you’d have to think that she’s the favorite to take it.
Prediction: Yastremska in 3
