Teenage American star Iva Jovic’s performances at the WTA Hobart International have shown why so many are excited about her future prospects. She will face Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Sunday, with both players vying for a second WTA title. As always, we here at LWOT give our prediction and analysis for the final, but which player do you expect to secure the title?
Head-to-head: first meeting
Jovic showed terrific resilience in her last two matches. She defeated the experienced Magda Linette before recovering from dropping the opening set against home favorite Taylah Preston. Straight-set triumphs over Janice Tjen and Renata Zarazua preceded those results. Cocciaretto has won six times since qualifying to reach this stage. Her most difficult challenge was a 1-6 7-5 7-5 victory against Ann Li.
Of the two players, there is more uncertainty about how Jovic will play. The 18-year-old is a terrific athlete who defends very well, but she generally prefers to use an attacking style. Cocciaretto always plays on the front foot, and that undoubtedly will not change in this matchup. Therefore, Jovic needs to find the correct balance between digging in and finding the right moments to put her opponent on the back foot.
Being consistently passive would be the wrong approach for Jovic. Cocciaretto thrives most when she has a consistent rhythm, and letting her constantly seize the initiative would give her that. But I do not think the teenager will fall into that trap. Jovic’s match awareness, despite being so young, is already outstanding. She stays calm under pressure and has a good sense of what style is needed for particular moments.
Cocciaretto’s considerable talent means her chances should not be ruled out. I expect this to be a tight battle, but Jovic is narrowly favored. The American’s defensive skills and coolness on the court give her a good chance of success.
Prediction: Jovic in 3
