WTA Hong Kong Day 3 Predictions Including Leylah Fernandez vs Eva Lys
Main Photo Credit: David Kirouac USA TODAY Sports

2023 WTA Hong Kong champion Leylah Fernandez will continue her quest for a second title against Eva Lys on Day 3. It promises to be an exciting battle between two of the most watchable players in the draw. That match and the others scheduled are predicted in this article, but who do you think will win?

WTA Hong Kong Day 3 Predictions

Cristina Bucsa vs Emiliana Arango

Head-to-head: Bucsa 2-0 Arango

Bucsa usually plays against opponents who possess more firepower than she does. Arango is a rare case of a player who relies even more on defense and solidity. Unsurprisingly, the Spaniard won their previous two meetings on grass, since she is more comfortable on the surface with her flatter shots. Arango has a better chance on a hard court, but I still give Bucsa the edge.
Prediction: Bucsa in 3

Maya Joint vs Viktoria Morvayova

Head-to-head: First meeting

Morvayova began the tournament ranked outside the Top 500 and has never been in the Top 300. However, she dismantled Coleman Wong 6-1 6-0 with a dominant display. The Slovakian will almost certainly need to be even better against Joint. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season and is usually relentlessly solid from the baseline. I do not think the Australian will falter in this matchup.
Prediction: Joint in 2

Ajla Tomljanovic vs Sorana Cirstea

Head-to-head: Tomljanovic 3-1 Cirstea

This battle of the veterans promises to be fascinating. Cirstea’s powerful forehand is her biggest weapon, while Tomljanovic’s backhand, at its best, remains one of the WTA’s most formidable. This could go either way, but Tomljanovic is narrowly favored because of her background superiority. That will put a lot of pressure on the more aggressive Cirstea to be clinical with her forehand.
Prediction: Tomljanovic in 3

Leylah Fernandez vs Eva Lys

Head-to-head: Lys 1-0 Fernandez

Lys has had a very good Asian swing, including beating 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina on her way to the China Open quarterfinal. Therefore, she will not be intimidated by playing a former US Open runner-up. Nonetheless, the conditions in Hong Kong suit Fernandez’s game perfectly. The Canadian’s preference for taking the ball early is rewarded, and even a great athlete like Lys will struggle to keep up if Fernandez plays near her best.
Prediction: Fernandez in 2
