Lots of exciting first-round matches are scheduled on day 2 of the WTA Miami Open. This article features former world No.4 and last year’s quarterfinalist, Caroline Garcia. As always, we here at LWOT will offer our predictions for every match on the slate. But which players will advance to the next round?
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Camila Osorio lost in the second round in Indian Wells but played two good matches and should be confident of doing better this week. The Colombian has shown gradual progress on hard courts in the last year and will go into this match as the slight favourite. 18-year-old wild card, Victoria Mboko, has been on a tear at the ITF level and has lost just one match this season. However, this is a huge upgrade for her. Mboko will play a top-100 opponent for the first time this season and it would be interesting to see how she performs against tougher competition.
Prediction: Osorio in 3
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Mayar Sherif is on a seven-match losing streak in all competitions and has won just one set this season. Her record in Miami is similar, with three first-round losses. Sherif is a good player on clay, but her win percentage of 20 on hard courts says a lot about her level on this surface. Lulu Sun is making her Miami debut and should be able to win this match against an inferior opponent on this surface.
Prediction: Sun in 2
Head-to-Head: Kessler 0-1 Bouzkova
McCartney Kessler has been in great form this year and was unlucky to face Aryna Sabalenka early in Indian Wells. Kessler has a slightly better draw here and will look to make a statement by playing a great match against Marie Bouzkova, who won the last time these two played. Bouzkova is on a three-match losing streak and played a bad match against Suzan Lamens in Indian Wells. I expect Kessler to get her first win at the Miami Open.
Prediction: Kessler in 3
Head-to-Head: Garcia 0-1 Bondar
Caroline Garcia is in desperate need of some match wins and the Miami Open might have come at the right time for the Frenchwoman. Garcia was in a similar run of form at this time last year and then played three outstanding matches here to advance to the quarterfinals. She will hope to find that form again this week otherwise she will be in danger of dropping out of the top 100. Anna Bondar did well to get through the qualifying rounds, but her overall form has been poor. Garcia should have enough to win this match.
Prediction: Garcia in 3
