Four-time Monterrey champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova gets her campaign underway against the talented 22-year-old Antonia Ruzic in her first appearance in the tournament since 2019. We also predict three more matches on the schedule in a separate article. Who will advance?

WTA Monterrey Day 2 Predictions

Alycia Parks vs Cristina Bucsa

Head-to-head: Parks 2-0 Bucsa

Parks has had an up-and-down season with more losses than wins. She is on a three-match losing streak and has won only one of her last eight matches. Parks will bring the firepower, but it is the discipline in her shot selection and execution that is largely inconsistent. Still, the American’s ability to peak out of nowhere cannot be underestimated, especially on a hard court and against an opponent she’s never lost to in two previous meetings.

Prediction: Parks in 3

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs Antonia Ruzic

Head-to-head: first meeting

Pavlyuchenkova is the most decorated champion in the tournament’s history. She’s lifted the Monterrey title on four occasions, more than any other player. But it’s been six years since her last visit to Mexico, and she has one first-round defeat to her name at the event. Ruzic is still relatively young but rising fast. This is her third successive qualifying run in a WTA tournament this swing, and she has multiple wins against Top 50 players this season. The quality and experience gap between the two is vast, but Pavlyuchenkova will need peak-level performance to topple the Croatian.

Prediction: Pavlyuchenkova in 2

Ajla Tomljanovic vs Renata Zarazua

Head-to-head: Tomljanovic 2-2 Zarazua

It took seven years of trying before Zarazua scored her first main draw win in Monterrey last season. The Mexican brings so much flair with her unpredictable but very effective crafty hands. The Mexican crowd will certainly play their part in creating a near-partisan atmosphere, although an experienced Tomljanovic won’t be easily rattled. It will be tight, but the Australian’s recent spirited performances and robust game will give her the edge.

Prediction: Tomljanovic in 3
