No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek was taken out by Clara Tauson in the fourth round, but there are still four very dangerous contenders looking to reach the final from the bottom half at WTA Toronto. Madison Keys and Naomi Osaka have won hard-court Slams, while Tauson and Elina Svitolina have been exceptional this season. Keys will try to avenge a loss from Auckland in January, while Osaka and Svitolina go to battle for the eighth time in their careers. Who do you think will make the final four?
Head-to-head: Tauson 1-0
While the conversation about this season regarding Madison Keys has been dominated by her incredible Australian Open winning run, it’s not like the American hasn’t been a consistent part of the elite since. She’s still dangerous and survived a high-quality thriller against Karolina Muchova to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Clara Tauson avenged her Wimbledon loss to Iga Swiatek in conditions that suited her game much more. She was the first player to defeat Keys this year in Auckland, but the pressure is still on her to deliver the goods in this hard-hitting contest with the American’s floor being a tad higher.
Prediction: Keys in 3
Head-to-head: Osaka 4-3
Naomi Osaka has already come a long way since saving match points against Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. The four-time Grand Slam champion recently ended her partnership with Patrick Mouratoglou and is now working with Iga Swiatek’s former coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski. She’s looking for a new stimulus to help her get back to her peak, and this might be it. The last two rounds have been extremely impressive with demolition wins over Jelena Ostapenko and Anastasija Sevastova. With Elina Svitolina, they used to compete regularly but have only played once since the pandemic. The Ukrainian has been messing up power players all week and is probably the slight favorite.
Prediction: Svitolina in 3
