WTA Rankings Update: Victorious Victoria Mboko up staggering 61 spots, Naomi Osaka also back into top 25

The WTA Rankings have finally been updated after the staggering week that was the Canadian Open in Montreal which saw Victoria Mboko continue her staggering rise to be crowned champion in Montreal. She beat Naomi Osaka in the final and both move up a serious number of spots on the eve of the US Open.

Mboko won her maiden title and was awarded a wildcard for the tournament as despite her being one of the real success stories of the season on the ITF Tour, she was yet to accrue enough ranking points to be toward positions to be included in the field by right. That is now not the case as she has surged into the top 25 almost overnight.

She saw off four Grand Slam winners en route to winning the title in Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Osaka to conclude her magical run in some style. She started the year at World No.333 before climbing to World No.85 before the tournament.

Mboko now finds herself at World No.24 in the WTA Rankings having surged up 61 spots with her title run. It shows just what one run can seriously do for a players career. Osaka also earned a big boost going up to 24 spots to World No.25 as she attempts to revive her fortunes. Both are now set to be seeded for the US Open.

Emma Raducanu was a loser of the week in regards to rankings. She lost in the third round and is now down six spots to World No.39. Albeit as she duly noted this week in appointing Francisco Roig, it matters little in the regard that she only really has points from Seoul now to defend with injury taking her out of most of last season. She keeps her British No.1 status too and will likely extend that. Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter both had great ends to 2024 and are failing to replicate that so for the moment are very much behind the eight ball when it comes to British No.1. A hotly contested race just a month ago.

Jessica Bouzas Maneiro is up nine spots to World No.41 as a result of her run to the Quarter-Finals in Canada. While Madison Keys climbs up two spaces to World No.6. Elena Rybakina even though she lost in the semi's is up two spots to World No.10 while Paula Badosa slipped down two places to World No.12.

Tauson rises as Sabalenka sits way ahead still

Clara Tauson is rewarded with a four place rise to a new career high of World No.15 after reaching the semi-final too. Aryna Sabalenka didn't play and is now up to 42 consecutive weeks at the top of the rankings. She takes her tally up to 50 weeks and next week will tie with fellow Belarusian Victoria Azarenka with SImona Halep her next target on 64 weeks. Albeit she potentially won't reach that mark or not yet anyway.

She has a lot of points to defend winning Cincinnati and US Open last year and will only tie the current tally over add to it. Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek though are the main reason why she could retain the top spot as poor weeks like Canada only mean that Sabalenka extends her lead.

She now has 4,341 points over Gauff and Swiatek is 736 points adrift meaning that even if she loses early at the US Open, the likelihood is she won't be overtaken. Gauff also will defend the WTA Finals and with Swiatek not playing for most of the end of last season due to a doping ban this could yet work in her favour when it comes to ascending back to World No.2. All eyes on Cincinnati and the US Open though when it comes to that.

Also down in the top 10 as a result of Keys rise is Zheng Qinwen and Amanda Anisimova. The Chinese ace is out for most of the rest of the season so is likely to fall even further especially given she had a great back end to 2024 and so the injury can't have come at a worst time for one of the stars of last year.
