WTA roundup: Maria Lourdes Carle notches impressive rally in Romania

Maria Lourdes Carle of Argentina overcame a big deficit in the opening set and went on to record a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over top-seeded Elina Avanesyan of Armenia in the second round of the Unicredit Iasi Open in Romania.

Carle trailed 5-1 in the opening set before winning four straight games to tie the match. The 124th-ranked Carle later forced a tiebreaker and won six of the final seven points to win the set before cruising in the second.

Second-seeded Jaqueline Cristian of Romania was leading 4-1 in the first set when Jana Fett of Croatia retired, while Romania's Sorana Cirstea defeated No. 5 Varvara Gracheva of France 6-2, 6-4. Others winners were No. 7 Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, Panna Udvardy of Hungary and Simona Waltert of Switzerland.

MSC Hamburg Ladies Open

Top-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia converted 6 of 10 break points during a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Caroline Werner of Germany in the second round in Hamburg.

Second-seeded Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine also advanced, cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over France's Diane Parry. Yastremska won 24 of 31 (77.4 percent) of her first-serve points.

No. 7 Anna Bondar of Hungary defeated Sinja Kraus of Austria 6-3, 6-2. Also, Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Astra Sharma of Australia.
