The 2025 French Open will come to a conclusion this weekend, with the men's final taking place on Sunday. With only four contestants remaining, former World No.1 Andre Agassi has chimed in on whom he believes will capture the prestigious title.
A pair of blockbuster semifinals are set, with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz taking on in-form Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the first match. The second semifinal will feature an intergenerational battle as World No.1 Jannik Sinner battle 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
The eight-time Grand Slam champion was a guest on TNT Sports during their coverage of the French Open. At the conclusion of the men's quarterfinals, Agassi predicted both Sinner and Alcaraz to make it to the final, and gave his thoughts on which player had the upper hand on the red dirt.
"When I look at Alcaraz and Sinner as the two that have sort of pulled away from the pack, I see advantage Sinner on any surface that is firm underneath," said Agassi. "I see Alcaraz having a slight advantage on any surface that I would call slippery.
"When you look at Alcaraz, he is crazy fast defensively. This is a guy that when you watch him move on a hard court, you’d put him top three in the world in movement, you’d put him, Tommy Paul and [Alex] de Minaur.
"Then you watch those same three run on clay, a [more] slippery surface, and you realize the fastest guys’ movement diminishes about 5% but Alcaraz’s only diminishes 1-2%.
"Alcaraz trusts his power in his legs and his second step so much, from incredibly defensive positions he can still hurt you, which means you have to have your guard up at all times."
The Spaniard leads Sinner 7-4 in career meetings, and prevailed in their most recent encounter in the Rome final last month. Sinner has not beaten Alcaraz since 2023, although that was prior to his incredible run to the top of the rankings.
"When you have a player like Sinner that can absolutely bludgeon the ball on both wings, he will never lose to somebody who doesn’t have the ability to at least hold their ground in the backhand corner," Agassi continued.
"He can hit the ball so emphatically to your backhand corner, that creates such a vacuum to your forehand corner that both sides of the court become Jannik Sinner hitting a ball into the Grand Canyon, he cannot miss it.
"I see two guys that play the game certainly differently, Sinner from corners, you think you’re in control of the point and you’re neutral. You’ve got Alcaraz that can make magic happen from any square centimeter on a tennis court. So, I think the storyline for the French Open is wide open and I’m excited to watch it unfold."
