Zheng Qinwen and Amanda Anisimova have booked their spots in the second week of the 2025 French Open after seeing off Victoria Mboko and Clara Tauson respectively.
The Chinese No.1 and Olympic Gold medalist is into the second week of Roland Garros for the second time after ending the run of the rising Canadian in straight sets. She advanced 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 26 minutes.
Mboko has been exceptional this season and has been one of the stories of the tournament so far. She saw off Eva Lys, Lulu Sun after coming through qualifying. She also has played a busy ITF and WTA 125k schedule so it was remarked by journalists that she looked tired after a busy few months.
She has carried in a 42-5 record this season and an increasingly dangerous reputation. She stretched both Paula Badosa and Coco Gauff in her previous meetings with top 15 players. But Zheng showed different class and was able to keep her nose in front during both hard fought sets. She faces either Liudmila Samsonova or Dayana Yastremska and will be favourite to reach a maiden Roland Garros Quarter-Final.
"I feel she played really well and I think we pushed each other to play our best tennis," Zheng said in her on-court interview. "We had some really good points, it was not an easy match."
While Anisimova who has not been in great form since winning at WTA 1000 level earlier in the season has also fired herself back into contention. She superbly dispatched Clara Tauson 7-6(4), 6-4 and has reached the Last 16 at Roland Garros for a third time.
Anisimova had to deal with blisters and a cut on her right hand during the second set but found a way through. But likely she will be the big test for the overall title favourite Aryna Sabalenka. She likely faces Sabalenka next who is currently battling wtih Olga Danilovic. Anisimova holds the cards against Sabalenka with a 5-2 Head to Head lead. They went 1-1 in 2024.
