Usain Bolt says coach could convince him to run again

Usain Bolt has nothing left to prove as a runner. He's the most accomplished runner in history, holding the world records for the 100 and 200-meter dash and winning 8 Olympic gold medals in his storied career. But the retired Jamaican runner says there is one person who could get him to return to the track: Glen Mills, his longtime coach.

"If my coach came back and told me, let’s do this, I will, because I believe so much in my coach," Bolt told Variety. "So I know if he says we’re going to do this, I know it’s possible. Give Glen Mills a call, and I’ll be back."

Bolt announced his retirement following the World Athletics Championships in 2017 and at the time, he said he had no plans to return.

"For me, I don't think one championship is going to change what I've done," he said at a press conference. "I personally won't be one of those persons to come back."

The running legend has remained true to his word, only occasionally returning to the track, which he says always gets Mills too excited about the prospect of Bolt running again.

"My coach gets too excited when I come to the track," Bolt said. "So I stay away."

So could Bolt be returning to track and field? It seems unlikely, as he is now focused on being a father. Bolt’s girlfriend, Kasi Bennett, gave birth to their daughter Olympia in May. However, Bolt did not rule out showing up for the 2021 Olympics, though it would be as a spectator with his daughter.

"The only good thing about is that I actually get to take my daughter next year if the world gets back," he said. "One of my moments is to have my firstborn just to walk on the track with me. That’s something that I always thought about."
