In our coverage of the San Antonio Brahmas game against the Houston Roughnecks in week 5, we crossed our fingers that our Texas friends would show up and make up for their prior loss. Birmingham had their ego knocked down a peg by their loss to the Memphis Showboats, but they’re back at it as high as ever in week 6. Let’s get into this southern slaughtering. But before we do, make sure you see all of our other UFL coverage here. We cover every game every week.
The Brahmas decided bringing back old talent was the move in between games. Former quarterback Kevin Hogan replaced the unsuccessful week 5 squad. The biggest bull out of all the Brahmas was this quote from head coach Payton Pardee: “I believe in all three quarterbacks we have. I think they’re all very talented. They all have unique skill sets, so I feel very confident.” Sure, Jan.
Hogan came out and wowed the crowd with a long pass down the field. However, one sack and a failed field goal later, the ball was with Birmingham. What a UFL team can’t recover from is when a kicker can’t save the team and get points in any circumstance.
Birmingham decided to shake up the narrative a bit and rely fully on their running back, Ricky Person Jr., to move the needle. Not only did he carry the ball five times down the gridiron back-to-back, he also ran the ball in for a TD. Nothing can stop the Stallions when they get going. After keeping the Brahmas pointless, Birmingham QB Case Cookus was cooking while Matt Corral is still recovering from his mom’s chicken. Cookus secured their second TD in back-to-back drives.
The Brahmas weren’t cowering away from confrontation. With three seconds on the clock in the second quarter, San Antonio kicker Tristan Vizcaino secured a field goal. Traveling 66 yards in 21 seconds had Brahmas fans going wild. We headed into halftime with some optimism on both sides with a score of 12-3.
San Antonio forgot to come back after halftime, so they’ll take a backseat in the second half of the game. We won’t have much to say about them because they don’t have much to do for themselves. Between the kicker Harrison Mevis and RB Person Jr., with a side of Case Cookus, the Stallions stampeded down the field, with Mevis making a 49-yard field goal, leaving the score at 15-3. Mevis wowed the crowd with another successful 50-yard field goal in the next drive, leaving the score 18-3 in the middle of the third quarter.
The Brahmas were doing so poorly, the Stallions gave their third-string QB, Andrew Peasley, a chance to get some game play. A sack and an incompletion later, and Cookus was back on the grill. With the aid of a penalty in the Stallions’ favor, they were able to get yet another touchdown with a successful two-point conversion a few minutes into the fourth quarter.
At some point things get too hard to watch. Two turnovers by the San Antonio Brahmas in the fourth quarter sealed their fate. The final 9 minutes of the game were pointless. Yes, that was a pun. San Antonio scraped their team off the gridiron and headed back to the great state of Texas in hopes of rallying and winning another game. The Birmingham Stallions appear to be back on top.
Both teams had the games we knew they were most likely to have. The Birmingham Stallions racked up their points and won once again, and the San Antonio Brahmas lost in poor form. The Memphis Showboats showed us anything is possible. The best of the league can be brought down, and the stragglers can secure a win. It’s very much an “on any given Sunday” situation heading into week 7 of the UFL. What are your thoughts on this game? Sound off below!
