Michigan Panthers Bring Back Former Michigan State Quarterback Following Davis Cheek Retirement

The Michigan Panthers lost one of their quarterbacks when Davis Cheek was placed on the retired list on Monday. Two days after the news, Michigan found his replacement, signing Brian Lewerke to a new deal.

Lewerke was released by the Panthers two weeks ago as part of the first round of training camp roster cuts after spending last year with the team as a backup. His NFL career includes stints with the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. Lewerke is no stranger to spring football, as he was a member of the Seattle Sea Dragons before the XFL season last year and played in The Spring League with the Alphas.

As a three-year starter at Michigan State, Lewerke threw for 8,293 yards and 47 touchdowns to 32 interceptions in 41 career games. He left the school as the Spartans' all-time leader in total offense (9,548 total yards), while also finishing third in career starts (38) and wins (22).
