The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) held its annual game division of the BAFTA awards show on Tuesday, April 8, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. The goal of the awards is to “honor outstanding creative achievement in the video game industry”, according to BAFTA. The award show began in 2004, and has been held every year since, except 2008 when the award show shifted from October to March (the show was held in October 2007 and next in March of 2009).

BAFTA has established itself as a major influence in the gaming community. Priding itself on democracy and uplifting creators of all backgrounds and platforms, BAFTA has been instrumental in providing accommodations and opportunities for all game designers and developers to achieve their dreams. While the BAFTA Awards honors many British creators, they also recognize the industry’s impact across the world.

The BAFTA Awards for gaming were held today, on April 8, and many deserving winners got their name called. All the winners from the show are compiled below, along with the other nominations. The list is filled with incredible entries. Astro Bot cleaned up, taking home five awards, including BAFTA Awards Best Game. Helldivers 2 also won multiple awards, while Still Wakes the Deep swept the performer categories.

The highest award honor each year, though, is the BAFTA Awards Fellowship Award. This award is dedicated to an individual who has made “outstanding contributions to the industry“. This years winner was Japanese composer & pianist, Yoko Shimomura, known for her work on Kingdom Hearts and many other games over the decades.

As described by BAFTA, “With an illustrious career spanning over three decades, yet ever modest and unassuming, Shimomura is one of the most influential video game composers of our time. The essence of her enduring dedication to the craft is simple: ‘It’s my love of music,’ she says. ‘The joy of being able to work with it and have people listen to it is what I like the most.’ Now, she receives the BAFTA Fellowship, a testament to her exceptional contribution to the industry.”
