Some Nintendo series churn out entry after entry, while others can remain dormant for years. We can reliably expect new Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Animal Crossing games on the Switch 2, but what about some of their lesser-known series? Here are five Nintendo series that are long overdue for a comeback. Here’s hoping they get one on the Switch 2.
Yes, I begin with the most obvious choice. Fans have been begging for a new entry in the classic racing series for two decades. While the Switch 1 did give us F-Zero 99, a 99-player online racer that is super fun and addictive, we want a new mainline entry in the series. With the Switch 2’s advanced specs, the races could be faster than ever, pumping the adrenaline to unimaginable levels. Now that we have all the mainline F-Zero games on Nintendo Switch Online and players racing through F-Zero 99, it’s the perfect time for the series to make its long-overdue comeback.
This RPG series is known as Mother in Japan and Earthbound in the US, but whatever you call it, it’s a quirky, highly original series that brought new life to the RPG genre. A return to the wacky world is long overdue, especially since the trilogy is still incomplete in the US. We want an English translation of Mother 3 on Nintendo Switch Online, or even better, we could have a Switch 2 collection that includes remakes of all three games in the spirit of the Super Mario RPG remake on the Switch 1. Make it happen!
This series has actually gone dormant twice. It seemed to die after the angel boy’s Game Boy outing, but then Kid Icarus: Uprising seemed to be revitalizing the series. However, Uprising was back in 2011, and there hasn’t been a new Kid Icarus game since. Why? The mythology-inspired world has plenty of potential to be expanded even further in a follow-up to Uprising, and the Switch 2 would be the perfect place to do so. On the more advanced hardware, we could get a wide-open mythological world to explore and fly around. Who wouldn’t enjoy a flying open-world game?
Like Kid Icarus, this boxing series went dormant for a while after Super Punch-Out! on the SNES, but then it got revived on the Wii. Also, like Kid Icarus, it went dormant again after its revival. Since the Switch 2 supports traditional controls, motion controls, and even mouse controls, you could choose your preferred method of play and box to your heart’s content. We need a return of Little Mac and the quirky characters he boxes. It a wonder that Nintendo has slept on Punch-Out! for so long, given how the NES game is considered such a classic.
You likely don’t know about this series unless you’ve played the NES StarTropics on Nintendo Switch Online or the NES Classic Edition. It’s a fun, lighthearted action-adventure game that shares a lot in common with The Legend of Zelda. It got a sequel, Zorba’s Revenge, also on the NES, but then the series vanished and hasn’t been seen since, which is a real shame. A modern remake or follow-up on the Switch 2 could be amazing. It could capture the flavor of exploring a tropical island and fighting off monsters with a yo-yo.
The Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console of all time, meaning that there are plenty of potential customers for these revivals. The Switch 2 might be the perfect place to go back to some of Nintendo’s long-dormant franchises and give them new life. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but as F-Zero fans will tell you, you should never lose hope.
