Sparrow Racing was a feature in Destiny 1, which players loved. However, it has not been seen in a Destiny game since 2017. Players have pushed Bungie to re-add it, but developers noted the time investment was not worth the player count. Destiny players finally get their wish, but not in the way they want. The mobile game, Destiny Rising, created by NetEase as a spinoff of Destiny 2, is getting Sparrow Racing.
Sparrow Racing was first introduced in Destiny 1 in 2015. Destiny 2 players have never seen the game mode, despite pleas from the player base to Bungie. The want has grown so high that Sparrow Racing has become a meme in the community. Bungie does not want to dedicate the time and resources to a mode that, for them, did not have the return on investment in player time and player spending.
Destiny Rising has seized the opportunity to draw players towards their game. In a post on X on August 9, they released a trailer for the Sparrow Racing League in the mobile game. The course shown takes place in the Vex network, an ideal spot for Sparrow Racing.
With the Destiny 2 player base in an uncomfortable spot, now is the best time for NetEase to capitalize on what players have requested in the game. Whether this will draw enough players to the game remains to be seen.
The likely answer is no. It seems NetEase is going for a more minigame-oriented Destiny, having already announced a fishing game mode and now Sparrow Racing. The aspect that makes Destiny 2 appealing to players is the loot and thrill of completing near-impossible challenges. It is unlikely that Destiny Rising will replicate this feeling for players. However, that does not mean non-Destiny 2 players will become interested in the mobile game, and it will hopefully extend to Destiny 2 itself. The franchise is in a strange spot right now. It remains to be seen what will happen in the future.
