Avatar: The Last Airbender is a huge part of many people’s childhood, and now it is set to become a part of Magic: The Gathering. Coming November 21st of this year, people are already foaming at the mouth for the new set. The elemental abilities of the characters from ATLA are a near-perfect fit for the mana types of MTG. Much more fitting than, say, Spiderman, at least.
Previews for the set are out, and the GAANGs all there: Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and even Uncle Iroh. They’ve even got a card for the cabbage salesman! Honestly, they’ve got their bases well covered as far as fan favorite characters go, but there are a few more characters we’d like to see in the new crossover. Note: I won’t be listing any characters from The Legend of Korra, as I believe the crossover will be limited to the characters introduced in ATLA.
The Boulder is conflicted about being placed so low on the list! Honestly, The Boulder was such a scene stealer. I know his scenes were there to showcase how tough Toph is and how well she utilizes her earthbending in combat despite her blindness, but I can’t focus on anything else except how funny he is. I can see The Boulder being a 1/1 or maybe 1/2 green mana dork.
Also known as Sparky Sparky Boom Man, Combustion Man was an instant fan favorite antagonist, as he significantly expanded the possibilities of where bending could go. Given that Combustion Man was able to use his combustionbending to attack his victims from a distance, I could see him being a high-cost red legendary creature with an activated ability that works similarly to spell cards like Lightning Bolt.
The moment where Aang met the Lion Turtle will always be one of my favorites in the entire show. It gave him important insight at a crucial time, but that was not all; the Lion Turtles were the ones who bestowed humanity with the ability to bend the elements. Without the Lion Turtles, there would be no ATLA. I could see them being high-cost legendary creatures with an activated ability to give other creatures the bending mechanic.
I have to admit, this is more based on vibes than anything else. I am just a huge fan of how this spirit looks. She is the supposed guardian of Jang Hui, though she only shows up after the most pressing issues have been resolved. She did do a lot for Kataras’ character development, though, and that counts for something in my book. I’d probably make her a colorless spirit creature or maybe even a legendary enchantment.
From all of these characters, I believe Hama is the most deserving of her own card. Her story is absolutely heartwrenching and tragic; locked in a prison by firebenders after they massacred her people, she took her destiny into her own hands. Slowly, over time, she learned to use her waterbending on the blood of living beings, eventually even other people.
She used her new bloodbending technique to facilitate her escape, but the hatred for firebenders never ceased. Hatred blossomed in her heart. Eventually, she would teach Katara this forbidden technique, against her will. I would imagine Hama as being a blue black legendary creature with an activated ability that would let her take another creature from the opponent’s battlefield and put it onto yours under your control.
And there you have it, the five characters I think we need the most from the ATLA x MTG set. I’m sure some of these are a long shot, but I’ve got my fingers crossed for them, and I bet I’m not the only one.
