Best Build For Master Difficulty in Oblivion Remastered

Fans have been pouring tons of hours into the latest remaster from Bethesda. After nearly 20 years left to collect dust on the archive shelves, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is back, and Oblivion Remastered is one of the hottest games 2025. One of many trends catching on quickly is trying to beat this open-world RPG on its hardest difficulty, Master.

There are many ways that a player can create a build that can get them through this challenge. Some players like to use exploits and bugs, and others choose to play the game as honestly as possible. For players who want to truly maximize their potential and make their path through the gates of Oblivion as easy as possible, I bring to you the most consistent and powerful build in Oblivion Remastered, optimized for Master difficulty, the Spellsword.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster’s Most Powerful Build

The Spellsword is my choice for the number one strongest build in Oblivion Remastered. I do believe in this choice, but I want to quickly acknowledge that other builds can also get you through Master difficulty. Stealth archer is another example of a top-tier build, but there are reasons why I’ve chosen to give the Battlemage the number one spot.

The main reason is that when playing on Master difficulty, the player deals 1/5 of their normal damage, and enemies deal 5x the damage to the player. The massive difference in incoming damage is why I think you should play a Spellsword if you’ve never played on Master difficulty before. The build I’m about to lay out for you will be able to help you survive the most challenging Oblivion gates and boss battles in the game.

The Breton race is the most optimal choice for this build as they have a natural 50% resistance to all magic. This race also provides +50 to your total starting Magicka pool. This makes this race the best of both worlds for both offense and defense, and is why the Breton is commonly considered the S-tier race in the game.

On Master difficulty, I do think it’s also important that you choose The Lord as your birthsign. This birthsign will provide you with 15% additional magical resistance, which stacks on top of your racial bonus for a total of 65% at level 1. The Lord birthsign has been reworked in Oblivion Remastered and also now provides the player with a +15 permanent buff to their armor rating. This allows us to create the foundation for an optimized tank character.

Spellsword Major Skills and Summary

We have already established that one of our main priorities with this build is to mitigate the impact of the 5x damage buff on Master difficulty. The other way that this build provides value in the most difficult situations is by being very optimized for combat specifically. This build uses as many of the skills that can directly impact the outcome of a fight and streamlines them into the ultimate magic-wielding warrior. The skills that we end up leaving in minor skills are still valuable and all contribute to leveling in Oblivion Remastered. They just won’t level up quite as fast.

The four main skills that make up the core of this build are Blunt, Heavy Armor, Destruction, and Restoration. The reason why we choose Blunt over Blade is for the new buff to Blunt weapons. Starting at 50 skill, your power attacks also temporarily provide you with a shield bonus. Heavy Armor obviously protects you from more damage than Light Armor, and these skills together synergize well with our Breton tank build. Destruction and Restoration are obvious choices for any magic user. You will want these as major skills to cast the most powerful damaging and healing magic in the game as soon as possible.

You will also need to choose Conjuration as a major skill. Summons are very powerful in this game, and you can also spawn Daedric armor and weapons for yourself. This will synergize well with your Heavy Armor skill, your Blunt skill, and your next major skill, which is Block. Possibly the most improved skill in Oblivion Remastered, Block is going to be a must-have to unlock the very overpowered shield bash at 75 skill.

The last major skill you want to choose is Alchemy. Both Alchemy and Alteration would be acceptable here, but I think Alchemy goes along with the build better, is an overall better skill to have at a high level, and is slightly less convenient to max out than Alteration.

Final Thoughts

All told, here is the finalized build at level 1 for Master Difficulty in Oblivion Remastered:

  • Race: Breton
  • Origin: Systres
  • Birthsign: The Lord
  • Specialization: Combat
  • Attributes: Strength, Endurance, Luck
  • Major Skills: Alchemy, Block, Blunt, Conjuration, Destruction, Heavy Armor, Restoration
  • Birthstone: Mage
