BrokenLore: UNFOLLOW is set to be the newest release in the BrokenLore anthology. This disturbing and thought-provoking series has created a fragmented horror universe where each game, while able to be played as a standalone, feeds into an overarching “mega-lore.” Developed by Serafini Productions and published by Shochiku, the BrokenLore universe focuses on storytelling through symbolism, folklore, and disturbing players through psychological horror. Upcoming entry UNFOLLOW is set for release on both PlayStation 5 and Steam in 2025.
Companion entry FOLLOW is also set for release later this year, and prior games LOW and DON’T WATCH can be found on Steam.
UNFOLLOW focuses on protagonist Anne, a young woman trapped inside a nightmare molded by the pressures of social media. The game has set out to be a social commentary piece on the impact of social media and internet culture on human well-being. It touches on the concepts of digital identity, the pressures of society, and the mental toll of being perceived in online spaces. It offers unique storytelling influenced by themes of body dysmorphia, social anxiety, cyberbullying, and the persistent desire for validation and reassurance.
The environment is rife with symbols to decode as you play, and the dialogue ties directly into the psyche of the struggling protagonist. BrokenLore’s topical third edition also features a system in which player choices impact which of the multiple endings they receive.
With a subscriber count of over 2.8 million on YouTube, akidearest appears as a character in the game. She’s since shared vulnerable reflections about her time online as a content creator, noting that dealing with online scrutiny has been difficult and emotionally taxing. She also encouraged everyone to take a step back from social media, understand the toxic and addictive influence it can have, and make efforts to reconnect with daily life, support systems, and themselves.
BrokenLore: UNFOLLOW is right up the alley of players who enjoy story-based games with symbolic narratives. It’s a great wishlist option for those who enjoy deeply understanding the character they play as. It’s also a fantastic choice for anyone who likes psychological horror games, especially ones that focus on real-world issues that they could potentially find themselves or their struggles reflected in. Those searching for a new game series to dive into may also enjoy the other games in the BrokenLore universe.
Developer Serafini Productions released ghost-hunting investigative horror game Ghost Frequency in collaboration with PIT Games on May 26. It’s received mixed reactions from players thus far.
