The dark RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a surprise hit with both critics and audiences. The debut game from Sandfall Interactive is set to become one of the most iconic games of 2025. Now, the developers say that they already have ideas for their second game.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 currently has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” user rating on Steam, with over 60,000 reviews. The game has been seen as a return for AA games, although it did generate some controversy about a seemingly false claim that it only had a development team of about thirty people. Regardless, it seems natural that the developer, Sandfall Interactive, would start work on a new game as soon as possible. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Sandfall’s COO François Meurisse stated that “There will be another video game for sure . . . I can’t wait to dig more into the ideas we already have for the next game.”
It seems that the obvious route for the developers to take would be to make a sequel to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. After all, the game was a massive hit, and fans would undoubtedly like to explore its world more. A sequel would also bring in plenty of money. Meurisse stated that studio head Guillaume Broche has “great ideas for the next game,” but said nothing about whether or not it was a sequel. Broche was “deliberately avoiding chasing trends” during Clair Obscur‘s development, so perhaps Sandfall’s next game won’t be chasing sequel trends. In an industry largely overrun by huge franchises, perhaps Sandfall can deliver some more refreshing original titles.
Whether Sandfall’s next game ends up being a sequel to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or an original title, the expectations will undoubtedly be high. This could end up being a blessing or a curse, since gamers might raise their expectations too high and then be disappointed when their unrealistic expectations are not met. Still, the team at Sandfall is dedicated to quality and passion, so we can expect that their next game will be full of the same passion that made Clair Obscur connect with people.
