The Prophecy dungeon for Rite of the Nine is almost upon us in Destiny 2. A Sudden Death is one of four weapons players can farm in the dungeon, and the only special weapon. It is the second time in around a year that A Sudden Death has received a perk refresh. The first is the Prophecy refresh during the Season of the Wish, before the Final Shape Expansion.
A Sudden Death is an Aggressive Frame Void Shotgun. The perk refresh for the Shotgun has given it one of the best perk combinations for Shotguns in Destiny 2. One-Two Punch, paired with Trench Barrel, is a melee player’s dream. The perks existed on the weapon before, but ended up in the same column. The Shotgun is also viable in PvP game modes with some of the best Shotgun perks out there.
A Sudden Death has twelve perks. The left column has Discord, Envious Assassin, One-Two Punch, Repulsor Brace, Slideshot, and Threat Detector. The right-column perks are Closing Time, Destabilizing Rounds, Opening Shot, Paracausal Affinity, Redirection, and Trench Barrel.
While the perks on A Sudden Death have viability, there are very few use cases for Shotguns outside of melee builds. The One-Two Punch and Trench Barrel Combination is one that players should not pass up. The weapon increasing melee damage and your melee increasing your Shotgun damage is a match made in heaven. While Warlocks may struggle to find the best use case builds for this weapon, Titans with most of their builds and Hunters with Combination Blow will take great advantage of the perks. Any foe that stands in your way will meet its doom in close-quarter combat.
A Sudden Death also has viability in PvP game modes. While it might not eclipse other Shotguns in the Crucible, it will serve players well. The left column has a clear perk winner in Slideshot. The increased Range and Stability you get from sliding will make this weapon deadly at close ranges. Sliding also tends to make it more difficult for your opponents to secure the kill on you. That makes the use of Slideshot a no-brainer choice for players wanting to use Shotguns in PvP.
The right column has two perks you can choose from. Opening Shot is a stable choice since it will always be active when you start engagements. Closing Time, while it previously received significant nerfs, remains a powerful option for PvP players. The only danger to using the perk is that its effectiveness will fall off the more ammo you have in your magazine. Keep that in mind when deciding between using Opening Shot or Closing Time for your Shotgun.
A Sudden Death drops from the Prophecy dungeon during the Rite of the Nine event. Players can expect the Shotgun to drop from every Prophecy chest, with attunement increasing its drop chance. Players can attune to A Sudden Death at the Rite of the Nine Social Space. Spending 250 Nonary Manifolds at the Eternity Chest has a chance to drop the Shotgun. There is likely an additional chest that will spawn after completing the Blight section before heading to the Cube Room. Four versions of A Sudden will drop: Base, Base Holofoil, Adept, and Adept Holofoil. Players can only obtain Adept versions of the Shotgun from the Ultimatum difficulty of the Prophecy Dungeon.
