The leveling system in Destiny 2 is changing in the Edge of Fate expansion. Players will increase their power level through the use of the Portal. Portal is a new feature added to Destiny 2 with the Edge of Fate. While the entire system is yet to be figured out, given the short time the creators spent at Bungie HQ, we have enough to have a good sense of how it functions.
The power level in Destiny 2 has been climbing steadily over the years. We can now reach power levels higher than our current year. With the Edge of Fate, that will no longer be the case. Everyone’s power will start at 10. Up until 200, all gear you earn will increase your power level incrementally. After you reach that stage, only gear dropped from Portal activities, dungeons, and raids will drop at a higher power level than your current.
Players can select from an abundance of activities on the Portal, ranging from solo to fireteam, that include the Crucible. Each activity will have a specified number of drops on it. Some might have one, while others might have specific weapons or armor types that drop from that activity. All of this information is available before you enter any activity. The better you perform in higher-level activities, the more your power will increase, and the higher tier gear you will obtain. Anything beyond 200 counts as Seasonal Bonus Power, meaning there is no Artifact power anymore, and your Bonus Power will reset every season.
For the first time in Destiny 2 history, players can choose their modifiers. Bungie is adding a host of new modifiers up for selection. One of the new modifiers is inspired by SamiKat, which has players complete the activity without a HUD. The difficulty will vary based on the modifiers you add. The more difficult you make it for yourself, the better rewards you acquire. Each activity gets a grade with an A as the highest.
You can not exceed the ranking significantly, but you can score lower than what is predicted. The time you spend in the activity and likely deaths will have an impact on your end score. The difference between scoring a B+ and an A could be that instead of getting 205 power level gear, you get 203, and your Gear Tier is three instead of four.
The infusion system is receiving an update in Edge of Fate. It seems like you will no longer need Upgrade Modules to infuse gear. All gear from 10-200 requires Enhancement Cores to infuse. From 201 and above, a new currency is used to infuse gear. These are called Unstable Cores. Dismantling 200+ gear should reward Unstable Cores. You will likely acquire more from Battle Pass rewards and completing higher-end activities.
The infusion cost scales are based on the difference between the power level of the gear you want to infuse. Going from 203 to 205 is cheaper than going from 203 to 210. Moving between different gear tiers does not affect the cost. Unstable Cores expire at the end of each season.
For players who experienced the Heavy Metal Event, you will recognize this feature. The Seasonal Hub has daily and weekly challenges, a weekly rank tracker, and a play button that takes you to all the relevant activities. This feature intends to centralize as much information as possible. Arms Week will use the same hub when it is available. The weekly rank track will reset every week, allowing you to earn various rewards each time. One of the rewards is yet to be revealed, but there are Cores, Shards, Strange Coins, and more.
