Legendary Gear is getting a massive overhaul in the new Destiny 2 expansion, the Edge of Fate. The new tiering system for weapons and armor is sure to shake up the way we farm during the expansion. Many have taken the impression that all legendary weapons will become obsolete in the Edge of Fate. We are here to explain to you why that will not be the case.
The new weapon tiers are a better way to represent the differences between levels of weapons. The highest tier you can get now is Adept weapons, which are equivalent to tier three in the new system. In theory, tier-four and tier-five weapons should be more attractive than any others. The enhanced Magazines, Barrels on tier four enhanced Origin Traits, and an extra row of enhanced perks on tier five increase the potency of each weapon.
There are three reasons that most of the weapons you utilize today will remain in your arsenal for most of the Edge of Fate. In most cases, the enhanced version of perks has increased the potency of a weapon by around 3%. A tier-five weapon may increase this number to around 6%, maybe up to 10% in some rare cases. For the vast majority of players, that increase will not matter. Those increases tend to make a difference in the higher-end content like Contest Raids, dungeons, Grandmaster Nightfalls, and low-man raids.
On weapons of the same archetype, the perks and origin traits will have a significant impact on which weapon is better. For example, the difference between Hezen Vengeance and Apex Predator is predominantly the origin trait. Even if Apex Predator is a tier five compared to a tier one Hezen Vengeance, likely, Hezen will still be better.
The final point is that most weapons will not have other competition in their archetype. There are plenty of archetypes and weapon affinities in Destiny 2. It is unlikely that most weapons will get replaced at the beginning of the Edge of Fate. Maybe once we reach the end of Renegades, we will start to see most of our current weapons eclipsed by better ones.
Acquiring tier-five weapons will take some time. At the moment, we do not know how exactly you can obtain them, but even weapons you have now that you can eventually get as tier-five, you will still use them until you reach that point. In conclusion, if it is a legendary weapon you use now, do not dismantle it until the time comes when you have something to replace it.
