Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, a new retro-inspired first-person shooter called Beneath is here to remind you that it’s never safe to swim anywhere. After making waves during Steam Next Fest, developer Camel 101 and publisher Wired Productions have unleashed their Lovecraftian horror shooter, and it looks like a gloriously terrifying trip into the abyss. The launch trailer gives us a new peek at the underwater chaos that awaits, radiating serious F.E.A.R. vibes, but with a distinct lack of breathable air.

Beneath is presented as a first-person survival horror adventure that throws you into the soaked boots of Noah Quinn, a seasoned diver whose day is about to get a whole lot worse. Based on the trailer, what starts as a routine expedition quickly spirals into a full-blown nightmare when he becomes trapped deep beneath the ocean. It turns out he’s not alone down there. An ancient, evil force has been chilling in the dark, and it’s not exactly thrilled about having a new roommate.
The game is a frantic blend of pulse-pounding action, psychological dread, and atmospheric storytelling. Noah isn’t just fighting grotesque, mutated creatures that would make H.P. Lovecraft himself squirm; he’s also fighting against his own sanity. With supplies dwindling and the pressure mounting (literally), you’ll have to navigate the crushing darkness while uncovering a sinister conspiracy that threatens all of humanity. No big deal, right?

The team at Camel 101, a dynamic brother duo named Ricardo and Bruno Cesteiro, is clearly pumped to finally share their creation. “Creating this game has been an incredible journey, and we’re excited to finally share what we’ve been working on over the past few years,” they said. “We hope everyone has as much fun playing it as we had creating it!” You can feel the passion, and it’s infectious. It’s always a good sign when the developers are just as excited as the players.
Leo Zullo, the Managing Director at Wired Productions, echoed that sentiment, calling Beneath “a love letter to the classics.” He praised the game for bringing back the thrill of old-school shooters while showcasing what a small, dedicated two-man studio can achieve. It’s a testament to the idea that you don’t need a mega-studio to create something special. Sometimes, all you need is a great idea, a ton of passion, and a healthy dose of cosmic horror.
NOW! Beneath surfaced on PC gaming via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.com on October 27. To sweeten the deal, there’s a limited-time 15% launch discount, so you can dive in without sinking your wallet. Don’t worry, console players, you weren’t left behind. The game launched for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S just a day later, on October 28. So, if you’re ready to trade your scuba gear for a shotgun and face down some unspeakable horrors, now’s your chance! It’s time to find out what lurks in the deep.
