Chapter 11, “Hellbreaker,” in Doom: The Dark Ages is a unique gameplay experience, with most of the chapter occurring with the Doom Slayer in control of the mighty Atlan mech.

Even though this chapter is linear compared to others, it does have a good hidden collectible that completionists do not want to skip.

In Chapter 11: Hellbreaker, the Doom Slayer controls the gargantuan Atlan mech into the bowels of a demon fortress. The mission is a fight-filled, cinematographic action sequence where you drive the Atlan to destroy waves of gargantuan demons and siege-like fortresses. The level is mostly linear, using brute force over puzzle-solving, and concludes in an epic mech vs. monster showdown.

Following the mech part, the Slayer leaves for a brief on-foot part, concluding the mission. It’s a fun, quick, but unforgettable chapter in Doom: The Dark Ages that signifies raw power and destruction in all Doom flair.

Hellbreaker Collectibles Summary

  • Secrets: 1
  • Collectible Toys: 1
  • Gold: 85
  • Demonic Essence (Armor): 1
  • Mission Challenges: 3

While brief compared to other missions in Doom: The Dark Ages, Hellbreaker contains a single secret that is also a collectible toy. Obtaining the item is essential in achieving 100% completion of the chapter.

How to Find the Atlan Toy Collectible

After completing the mech combat sequence, the Doom Slayer gets off the Atlan and spawns on the arm. Instead of progressing forward, turn around immediately. You can see the Atlan toy perched on the head of the mech, an easy spot to overlook during the middle of a battle. The precise placement places this as one of the more subtle collectibles within the game.

Gold and Demonic Essence

During the Hellbreaker chapter, you can obtain a total of 85 gold pieces. These are distributed throughout the level and can be obtained by simply exploring the environment carefully. You will also get Demonic Essence by killing certain enemies and fulfilling certain challenges, which is vital to use for the armor upgrade.

Mission Challenges

Like other missions in Doom: The Dark Ages, there are optional challenges to do. Here are the three mission challenges in Hellbreaker.

1: Elusive: Dodge a Perfect five times. You can accomplish this in the Atlan mech sequence by dashing at the fraction of a second before an enemy attack hits. Earning the challenge rewards you with 50 gold.

2: Dispersion: You need to kill 3 or more demons as the Slayer with one Holy Swarm burst, five times. Leaving the Atlan mech, you’ll get the Holy Swarm Shield Rune. This rune will let your shield spit out homing projectiles as you deflect successfully from green attacks. You’ll be getting 50 gold!

3: Crushinator: Kill two or more Titans with a Stomp attack. At the beginning of the mission and piloting the Atlan mech, you’ll have several Titan-class enemies, so charge up your meter halfway (or more) to be able to use the stomp. Position two Titans next to one another that you can hit at the same time, which will give you 50 gold!

Completion Tips

  • Map Awareness: Check your map regularly for any undiscovered objects or areas. Collectibles are highlighted when you approach them. Chapter Select: If you missed a few collectibles, you can retry Hellbreaker using Chapter Select. The previously collected objects will remain highlighted, allowing you to focus on the ones you’ve missed.
  • Thorough Exploration: Even in linear levels like Hellbreaker, take the time to explore off the beaten path. Hidden nooks and crannies often house valuable items.
  • Be Careful: Sure, it’s common sense. But don’t get too cocky, stay focused and attack when you’re able to without punishment!

Final Thoughts

While Hellbreaker may be easy, especially when compared to the rest of Doom: The Dark Ages’ levels, its hidden Atlan toy collectible makes it another puzzle for those chasing completeness. Being careful about your surroundings and returning if you’ve left something behind will give you no secret unharvested. Good hunting, Slayer!
