Electronic Arts, the studio responsible for publishing bangers of games like Star Wars Jedi, Dead Space, and Battlefield 1, is still working on at least three Marvel games, despite Black Panther’s cancellation and shutting down the studio behind another possible banger of a game.
Electronic Arts made the statement shortly after revealing a wave of layoffs and refocusing efforts on its core franchises. Black Panther was part of a three-game deal with EA and Marvel. The other two superhero games are currently in progress, with Iron Man being developed by Motive Studio, and the last game is yet to be revealed.
A Marvel representative added more context, confirming that the development of the Iron Man game is the first of EA’s Marvel games announced to the public. According to Marvel,
“The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA, a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various beloved Marvel characters, remains strong. Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel’s Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios.”
This statement made by Marvel puts rest to the supposition that EA might not want to work with Marvel. The cancellation of Black Panther was a huge surprise to both Marvel fans and gaming fans, especially since Black Panther is a major part of Marvel’s global brand. But it appears that EA is focusing more on its creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.
The Black Panther game, which is now cancelled, would have seen players role-play in the single-player open-world game. Cliffhanger Games Studio recently took on the role of the staff mourning the cancellation of the project we would all have loved.
