Puyo Puyo Tetris is a game that combines two classic puzzle games for twice the casual fun. It was released on various platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. It had a sequel, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, and now the series’ newest entry, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Puyo Puyo Tetris was released in 2014 by Sega. It featured a variety of modes where you could play the classic puzzle games Puyo Puyo and Tetris in different ways. The sequel added a new story and character-based skills and items that you could use to gain an advantage when playing. Both games offered fun, addictive challenges and could introduce the immortal puzzle games to a new generation.
The trailer for 2S advertises many of the features that were offered in the first two games, such as four-player multiplayer. It states that there are twelve different modes of play with lots of different rulesets, but it doesn’t specify whether or not the story mode will be returning. However, Nintendo’s official site confirms that the story mode will indeed return, so it’s a wonder why the trailer wouldn’t advertise it.
The trailer advertises an interesting new mode where players can play competitively on the same board instead of having to use two separate boards. The trailer also states that you can take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2’s Joy-Con mouse controls to “give your buddies some pointers.” Perhaps this means that you can use the mouse controls to nudge your friends’ pieces into unfavorable spots.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S will be available on June 5, the day the Nintendo Switch 2 launches. It will cost $39.99 and it is available for preorder now. Of course, many gamers will be choosing Mario Kart World as their first Switch 2 game and its extravagant price will likely bleed a lot of pockets dry, leaving little money left for a puzzle game. However, if you want a puzzle game with personality that’s cheaper than a lot of the Nintendo Switch 2 first-party offerings, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S might be right for you.
