Dark Quest 4 is an indie game born out of a love of the board game, Hero Quest. Once again, players will be diving into Hell to take on missions and monsters as they work their way through the dark world. The fourth entry in a fan-favorite series, this dungeon crawler combines RPG elements to provide fans with a truly immersive experience. Best of all, a demo for the game is available now, offering those interested a chance to explore the atmosphere and all the game has to offer, ahead of a later 2025 release. We got to ask some exclusive questions of the developer, who promises a fantastic experience for new players and long-term fans alike.
Indie games continue to be the heartbeat of the video game industry. While AAA games get the big budgets and industry publicity, it is the smaller studios that are producing content at a rapid pace, delving into concepts that other large developers are not willing to take on. Dark Quest 4 is another game on this list, part of a long-running series that has proven highly popular with dungeon crawler fans and fans of some legendary board games such as Hero Quest and Dungeon Saga. It is not just a turn-based RPG, but actually throws players directly into handcrafted dungeon adventures that are fully voiced by a dungeon master.
Brain Seal, the indie developer behind Dark Quest 4, has highlighted several features for fans to look forward to in the newest series entry.
Key Gameplay Features:
Multiplayer for Up to 3 Players – Team up with friends and tackle dungeons together.
Turn-Based Tactical Combat – Carefully position your heroes and plan your moves in grid-based battles.
Level Editor & Steam Workshop Integration – Create your own quests and campaigns, or explore adventures made by the community.
Animated Figurines & Tabletop Aesthetics – A visual style that feels like your favorite board game comes to life.
- Voiced Dungeon Master – The evil sorcerer acts as narrator and guide, adding personality and atmosphere to every session.

Total Apex Gaming had an opportunity to ask the development team some questions about what to expect from Dark Quest 4, and it really has us hyped for the full game to come out. Check out the interview below.
Questions and Answers:
1. What is one thing you would want to highlight for fans that sets Dark Quest 4 apart from other competitors in the space?
Dark Quest 4 is a unique experience for turn based games as it gives you a board game feeling with a classic dungeon crawling experience.
2. How does Dark Quest 4 connect to the previous entries in the series?
Dark Quest 4 sits somewhere between dark quest 1 and dark quest 2. We tried to capture the core gameplay loop of moving square by square with 3 party members navigating through a dungeon and its challenges.
3. What is it about the series that has allowed it to carry on for four generations thus far, and how far does the team plan on taking it in the future?
The game foundation is Hero Quest and the unique feelings it gave you. It carries forth the same concepts adapted to a video game which connects with lots of players around the world.
4. What improvements in the system have been made from Dark Quest 3 to Dark Quest 4?
Dark Quest 4 builds upon a lot of the systems, mechanics and world art and refines them to a more focused dungeon crawling experience. The exploration system instead of using cards now asks the player to use the heroes to explore a dungeon that spans through several floors using a grid square system. The combat system is mostly the same with refinements and small improvements here and there to make it even more satisfying, such as the new initiative system.
5. If you could choose one word to sum up the game to fans, what would that be?
Well if you are looking for one word I would say Unique.
Keep in mind, the team also states that Dark Quest 4 is a “game of your imagination”, and given everything we have learned so far, that statement really paints the picture perfectly in just a few words. Keep in mind, a demo is available for anyone interested on Steam, ahead of Steam Next Fest. The demo offers you thirty minutes of gameplay, including starting at the hero camp and setting up your party, two gear shops to explore, three unique missions, and a full tutorial. Explore the world, atmosphere, and gameplay before the full game release later this year on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.
