Fortnite Adds Daft Punk Experience and Proximity Chat Chaos

Hold onto your helmets, everyone, because it looks like Daft Punk is making a comeback! Sort of. Not really. But hey, it’s something! The iconic, and sadly defunct, electronic music duo is getting a fresh spin inside the wild world of Fortnite. That’s right, the battle royale behemoth is hosting an interactive tribute experience, and I am cautiously optimistic.

The “Daft Punk Experience” is set to launch this Saturday, September 27th. Now, before you get your hopes up for a reunion tour announcement, let’s pump the brakes. Epic Games has been painfully, almost comically, clear about this.

So, Is Daft Punk Getting Back Together?

In what might be the most straightforward FAQ answer in gaming history, Epic stated: “Is Daft Punk getting back together? No.” Well, there goes that dream. They continued, just to pour a little salt in the wound, “The Daft Punk Experience is an immersive music experience based on the band’s beloved music. The band is not getting back together.” Thanks for the clarification, I guess? A little piece of my soul just died, but I’ll power through.

So, what is this thing, then? It’s not your typical in-game concert like we’ve seen with other artists. Instead, it’s being described as a “playground.” Players will get to:

  • Remix existing Daft Punk tracks.
  • Create their own Lego Music music videos (because why not?).
  • Just hang out and dance to the classics.

It’s a clever way to pay homage to a duo that isn’t performing live anymore. No new music will be debuted, so don’t expect any unreleased tracks from the vault.

What’s the Catch? (There’s Always a Catch)

You know how this goes. With any cool Fortnite collaboration comes the inevitable flood of in-game purchases. And this one is no different! Get your V-Bucks ready, because you’ll be able to snag some slick digital swag. We’re talking about GM08 and TB3 skins, themed instruments for the Fortnite Festival mode, and even the track for “Get Lucky.” Because if you’re going to get third-partied by a 12-year-old, you might as well do it while looking like a futuristic robot.

This news drops alongside another chaotic addition to the Fortnite universe: the proximity voice chat mode, “Delulu.” It launched to massive player numbers but, shocker, also brought a tidal wave of toxicity and abuse. Epic has already swung the banhammer on “thousands” of accounts. So, while you’re vibing to Daft Punk, maybe keep your mic muted if you want to preserve your sanity. It seems the social experiment of giving everyone a live mic in a competitive shooter is going about as well as you’d expect. One can only hope the Daft Punk playground is a slightly more chill zone.
