Donkey Kong Bananza is chock-full of references to the older Donkey Kong games. Finding all the tributes to the series’ history can be a game in itself. One such Easter egg involves a hidden replica of Donkey Kong’s house from the Donkey Kong Country series.
Fans of the Donkey Kong Country games on the SNES will find that Bananza has plenty of winks to that beloved series. Now, fans have discovered that you can even visit Donkey Kong’s retro treehouse. According to The Gamer, all you need to do is turn left instead of right at the beginning of the first side scrolling level. Climb up the cliff, and you’ll be greeted with the familiar sight of Donkey Kong’s old treehouse, lovingly crafted to resemble how it looks in Donkey Kong Country.
Just the house’s presence would be enough of an Easter egg, but Nintendo added some extra surprises inside the house. Enter the house and you’ll find a Banandium Gem, along with even more references to the Donkey Kong Country games. Among the references are a plush of Rambi the rhinoceros, a toy mine cart, and a painting of Donkey Kong with Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Cranky Kong.
Nintendo put a whole lot of love into Donkey Kong Bananza, and this is just one of the many ways the game pays homage to the Donkey Kong series. While it may take some extra exploration to find this particular Easter egg, the payoff of seeing Donkey Kong’s old house and the surprises inside is definitely worth the effort. It also illustrates the unwritten rule of gaming: when you’re supposed to go right, always go left first. You never know what might be waiting off the beaten path.
