Bosses that give us a run for our money are something that tends to stick in our brains. You spend the most effort trying to figure out how to beat a boss, so when you come up against a nearly unbeatable one, it’s memorable. The satisfaction you get from beating a really tough boss triggers the release of dopamine and is one of the reasons we play video games in the first place. I’ve compiled a list of the toughest bosses of the 2000s, an era where things were simpler and cleaner. This is a real nostalgia-inducing thing, which is never bad. Some of our fondest memories are from the Star Wars Saga as kids and sniping in Metal Gear Solid. If you’re reaching that age where the past looks brighter, revel in these five bosses:
Bosses simply don’t get better than Darth Malak. He is a character from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. Knights of the Old Republic 2 is an RPG game. It is a single-player experience. The baddest of the bosses, Darth Malak blocks players from being able to use abilities and harries them around the map. During “Phase Two,” Malak is able to regenerate from the myriad of Jedi corpses spread about.
Another detriment is lack of solidarity; the player’s party stays behind during the boss fight, so you must face Malak alone. Take advantage of med packs here, and you’ll survive the most intimidating of the bosses.
Next up of the bosses is Raam. He is from Gears of War. His official title is General Raam. And he is armed to the teeth in this boss battle. He is equipped with a portable turret, a surly attitude, and almost impenetrable armor. To even begin to cause damage, you must shoot the armor off piece by piece, making him a truly formidable opponent and one of the best bosses on this list.
The End is from Metal Gear Solid 3. He is a sniper who camouflages himself. In this way, he makes it a lot harder to spot and target him. This boss battle is unique and dynamic, making it one of the top boss fights in Metal Gear Solid history–and, in fact, in the 2000s.
Awakened Alma is from Ninja Gaiden. She is one of the toughest female bosses of the 2000s, and Ninja Gaiden is known to be one of the toughest games of the 2000s. Alma is a strange creature with flying and scuttling abilities. She can unleash a variety of attacks and do significant damage. Dodging her offense is particularly difficult.
Elizabeth is from Persona 3. She is actually an optional boss. She is one you may want to consider avoiding. Elizabeth plays by her own rules–literally. She puts conditions and rules in play that the player is unaware of, so if a rule is broken, Elizabeth heals and destroys you. It will inevitably take multiple tries against this baddie because the likelihood of guessing all her rules on the first try is slim. Her rules are particularly punishing, too: you may only face her alone, and you cannot use what the game calls “Personas” or certain types of items in the game. Lastly, you face a turn limit and can easily run out of time to beat her.
So give these bosses a try–or avoid them! It’s your call.
