German video games convention gamescom is expanding into Latin America: From June 26 to 30, 2024, the first ever gamescom latam will take place at São Paulo Expo in Brazil. This event will be a cooperation between gamescom and BIG Festival, which is an already existing games convention in the country. 2023’s BIG Festival welcomed around 50,000 guests, gamescom had 320,000 attendees this year.

This is gamescom’s second regional event after gamescom asia, which took place in Singapore for the first time in 2021. These plans for Brazil are unlikely to impact the main event in Cologne, Germany, which is traditionally held in August, in any way.

“With our events abroad, we accompany our customers to the most important growth markets worldwide,” explained Gerald Böse, the CEO of organizer Koelnmesse. “After gamescom asia, gamescom latam is by no means a competitor to the successful original event in Cologne, but rather an ideal addition to our international portfolio.”

Felix Falk, managing director of the German games industry association, commented that Latin America and especially Brazil are exciting emerging markets for the industry. He also highlighted that “the international games industry needs events” in what is perhaps a little bit of a shot at E3, gamescom’s old competitor, which hasn’t managed to get an event up and running for several years now.

For Gustavo Steinberg, the new CEO of gamescom latam and former CEO of BIG Festival, the German event’s expansion to Brazil is a “recognition by the world's largest gaming companies of Brazil and Latin America as central territories.”

“It is also an important alignment between two events that already had the same nature: for both gamescom and BIG Festival, celebrating the world of games and gaming communities by showing the newest releases, the best games and so much more to fans,” Steinberg continued. “It is for this reason that BIG Festival will continue to exist as one of the areas within gamescom latam, attracting the best independent games from around the world as we have been doing since 2012, but now within a platform with much expanded visibility.”

Omelete Company, which is another big event organizer in the country, and the city of São Paulo have joined this alliance behind gamescom latam as well.
