The director of Hell Is Us is calling out Team Cherry’s sudden shadow-dropped release date, and it’s a lot. Hollow Knight shocked fans when a trailer and release date were showcased at this year’s Gamescom. Looking at it plainly, Team Cherry didn’t really do anything wrong, but Jonathan Jacques-Belletête has something to say about it. Here’s all we know.
Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, the director of Hell Is Us, is calling out Team Cherry for the sudden release of their new game and a sequel to one of their titles, Hollow Knight: Silksong. Due to the shadow-drop release of Silksong, other games have had their release delayed. Such games include Little Witch in the Woods, Demonschool, Aeterna Lucis, Megabonk, CloverPit, Faeland, Starbirds, Baby Steps, and Moros Protocol. Even Stomp and the Sword of Miracles, an indie game with no release date plans yet, delayed their Kickstarter launch and demo release due to Silksong.
The announcement of Hollow Knight: Silksong at Gamescom was an instant success. Not many people expected it, and gamers were absolutely stoked to see a demo of the game during Opening Night Live at Gamescom. Even after the announcement, gamers were raving about the game, apart from its high difficulty, which warranted a patch update of the game to adjust the difficulty level of enemies. So it’s not that much of a stretch for Jacques-Belletête during an interview with Skill Up to state,
“They’re allowed to do what they did. There are no rules or laws against that. I don’t wanna get say they caused this to us or somebody else, I don’t really care about that, and I don’t really wanna get into that type of debate, but when you’re that big, I think a shadow drop is a bit like wow.”
Comparing Silksong to GTA 6, calling it the “GTA 6 of indie”, the Hell Is Us director says that Silksong was just way too big a game, and Team Cherry just way too big a studio to shadow-drop their release like that. It does suck that so many games had to delay their release dates because of Silksong’s release. However, I don’t believe Team Cherry had done so intentionally, or with consideration for how it affected game releases at this time of year. What do you think about Team Cherry’s decision? Was it the wrong call, or just a coincidental consequence of their decision?
